Stellenbosch Wine Tours

Stellenbosch wine tours, sipped slowly

Cellar doors, vineyard lunches and the Franschhoek wine tram — chauffeur-driven from your Cape Town hotel, shaped around the wines you actually want to taste.

45 minutes from the city

The Winelands, without the driving

Stellenbosch is South Africa's most storied wine region — three centuries of estates, Cape Dutch gables and mountains on every horizon, all within forty-five minutes of Cape Town. We run Stellenbosch wine tours year-round with chauffeur-driven transport, a local host who knows the winemakers, and every tasting fee named up front.

Start with a single Stellenbosch wine tour below, fold it into one of our Cape Town holiday packages, or read our full Stellenbosch destination guide first. Nothing here is fixed — you tell us the wines, the pace and the lunch, and we build the day.

Questions

Stellenbosch wine tours, answered plainly

How far is Stellenbosch from Cape Town?

About 45 minutes by car from Cape Town city centre, along the N1 or the scenic R44 through Somerset West. Every wine tour we run includes door-to-door hotel pick-up, so nobody in your group has to nominate a driver.

How much does a Stellenbosch wine tour cost?

A chauffeur-driven full-day Stellenbosch wine tour starts from around R1,650 per person including transport, your guide and the tastings listed on your itinerary. Private departures cost more per person than shared ones but move entirely on your schedule.

Do we need a designated driver for wine tasting?

No. That is the entire point of a guided wine tour. Your chauffeur stays with you between estates, so everyone in the group can taste, linger over lunch and enjoy the day. If you prefer to self-drive, we will happily plan the route and book the estates instead.

Stellenbosch or Franschhoek for a wine tour?

Stellenbosch is bigger, more historic and better for variety: three or four very different estates fit comfortably into one day. Franschhoek is smaller and more food-led, and the wine tram makes it easy. Most of our guests combine both, either in one full day or over a weekend.

When is the best time for a Stellenbosch wine tour?

Any month works, but they taste different. Summer (December to February) is harvest season with long evenings on the lawns. Autumn (March to May) turns the vineyards red and gold. Winter means fireplaces and red wine. Spring is quiet and green with the best value of the year.

How many wine estates can we visit in one day?

Three is the sweet spot. A fourth is possible if tastings run short, but we plan days around a proper vineyard lunch rather than racing through cellar doors. Quality over quantity is what our guests thank us for afterwards.

Is the Franschhoek wine tram worth it?

Yes, especially for a first visit. It links estates you can wander between at your own pace, and the hop-on-hop-off tickets are easy to pair with a private transfer from Cape Town. Our Franschhoek wine tram guide covers the lines, tickets and timing in detail.

Can non-drinkers and children join a Stellenbosch wine tour?

Absolutely. Estates offer grape juice tastings for children, and Stellenbosch has enough to keep non-drinkers happy: the historic town walk, gardens, art studios and exceptional food. We shape the day around the whole group, not just the tasters.
