The Cape Town Staycation Guide: Ten Lekker Things to Do in Your Own City

You live in the Mother City. Rand-friendly, load-shedding-proof, and ten genuinely lekker things to do in Kaapstad this weekend — no flights, no visas, no excuses.

The most under-marketed travel destination in South Africa is the one you already live in. Capetonians spend fortunes flying to Zanzibar and skip the Cederberg for a decade. This is a nudge — not a hard sell — for the weekend you were going to spend on the couch anyway.

Marketing works when it makes the familiar feel new. So here are ten things to do in Cape Town that a tourist would pay thousands for, and a local can do with a full tank and a friend.

Free (or nearly)

Sunrise hike up Lion's Head on a full moon. Kirstenbosch summer concerts on a Sunday. Sea Point Promenade with a Kauai smoothie. The Company's Garden with a book. Muizenberg for a beginner surf lesson — R450 and you'll be up on the board by lunch.

Insider tips

  • Full-moon Lion's Head fills up. Park at Signal Hill and walk in.
  • Kirstenbosch tickets drop on Monday for the following Sunday. Set an alarm.
"The best travel destination in South Africa is the one you're standing in. Stop scrolling. Go outside."

Worth the spend

A night at Tintswalo Atlantic in Hout Bay (locals rate). A long lunch at La Colombe. A morning at the Two Oceans Aquarium with the kids. A helicopter flip over the Twelve Apostles — R1,800pp, 20 minutes, unforgettable. Book direct, not through the concierge markup.

Insider tips

  • Sunday brunch at Roundhouse is the local trade secret. Book two weeks out.
  • Off-peak (May–August) is when Kaapstad is best. Fewer people, better prices, no wind.

The load-shedding-proof list

Zeitz MOCAA (fully backed up). V&A Waterfront (mall + generators). Any wine estate with a restaurant. Constantia Nek trails. The Bo-Kaap walking tour. All open, all lit, all lekker even when the grid isn't.

Key takeaways

  • 01Being a tourist in your own city is a mindset, not a budget.
  • 02Book weekend activities on a Monday. Kaapstad locals sleep on it.
  • 03Off-peak beats peak. Every time.
